The smell is the symptom

Mildew needs moisture, warmth and something to feed on. Carpet padding, seat foam and the dust that collects under them supply the food. The moisture almost always comes from a leak, a spill that was never dried, or windows left open in a storm. Colorado's dry air helps vehicles dry out faster than in humid climates, but a soaked carpet pad sealed under rubber mats and a closed cabin can stay damp for weeks.

Before anyone treats the smell, confirm where the water came from and stop it. Otherwise the vehicle passes the sniff test on the lot, gets sold, and the buyer discovers the leak after the first heavy rain or snowmelt.

Tracing the water

  1. Find the wettest spot

Press on carpet in each footwell and the cargo area. Lift trim at the door sills if it comes off easily. The wettest spot is usually closest to the entry point.

  2. Check the obvious entry points

Door and window seals, sunroof drains, rear hatch seals, third brake light gaskets and antenna bases are common culprits.

  3. Run a controlled water test

With someone inside watching, run water from a hose over one area at a time, starting low and working upward.

  4. Look at the HVAC drain

A clogged evaporator drain can dump water onto the passenger-side floor. Check it on a warm day with the air conditioning running.

  5. Repair, then dry

Fix the leak, then dry the carpet and pad completely, lifting carpet if needed, before treating any remaining odor.
