Where a spill goes
- First seconds
- Liquid sits on the fabric surface; blotting removes most of it.
- First minutes
- It soaks through seat fabric or carpet fibers into the foam or padding below.
- First hours
- Gravity pulls it to the lowest point: the bottom of the seat cushion or the carpet backing.
- Following days
- Trapped liquid sours, especially milk, juice and coffee with cream, and the smell rises through the fabric.
Why padding holds smell
Seat foam is open-cell, like a sponge. Carpet sits on felt or foam padding laid over the metal floor. Both soak up liquid quickly and dry slowly, especially in a closed car. Organic liquids such as milk, juice and vomit feed bacteria, which produce sour smells. Surface cleaning lifts the top layer but leaves the reservoir underneath.
Sugary drinks leave sticky residue that attracts dirt and stays tacky; coffee and tea can stain foam brown. The sooner a spill is blotted, the less reaches the foam, so keeping a towel in the car is worth it.
Layers in a car interior
- Seat cover
- Fabric, leather or vinyl outer layer.
- Seat foam
- Open-cell cushion that absorbs liquid.
- Carpet backing
- The underside of the carpet, often rubberized.
- Jute or foam padding
- Sound-deadening layer under the carpet that holds moisture.
Treating a soaked spill
Blot, do not rub
Press with towels to pull out as much liquid as possible.
Extract
Use a wet-dry vacuum or extractor to pull liquid from the foam or padding.
Clean with an enzyme product
Apply per directions so it reaches the depth the spill did, especially for milk or vomit.
Dry thoroughly
Leave doors open, use fans, and lift carpet edges if possible; drying can take a day or more.
Recheck closed up
Smell after the car has sat closed in warm weather.
Common questions
Do I need to remove the seat?
For large spills that reached deep into the cushion, removing the seat or cover allows thorough cleaning and drying. Many spills can be extracted in place.
Why does coffee smell sour after a few days?
Milk and sugar in coffee feed bacteria in the foam, which produce a sour smell as they grow.
Can a fan dry seat foam?
A fan with doors open helps, but thick foam may take a day or more. Extraction first speeds drying a lot.
Will baking soda help?
Sprinkled on dry carpet and vacuumed after a few hours, it can absorb a little odor, but it will not reach liquid in the padding.
